Plaza Gracia

On a visit to Granada this July morning I only had the chance to take one photo. It is of Plaza Gracia, a little known and photographed square off Calle Recogidas one of the main shopping streets, and I think the church is San Cecilio. I though it made a nice scene with the children playing in the little playground.

Dancing in the Street

Dancing in the Street

This girl was dancing to her own music (note the headphones) outside the Palacio de Justicia in the Plaza Nueva, Granada. I think she was performing for her own pleasure because there was no collection box. It was a difficult photo to capture with a compact camera – shutter delay and no viewfinder. Oh I wish for an SLR. Also the city was heaving with people so I also had to chose a moment when there were no passers by.

Viva España!

Spain are playing the Czech Republic at football in the Euro 2012 qualifying competition in Granada this evening. There was much excitement in the City this morning. This stall was selling supporter’s gear.

A euro for a smile

A euro for a smile

Not a very flattering portrait with the strong diagonal sunlight but I liked the colours and the tones of grey and the young lady trying to raise money by being a human statue looked charming. Statues don’t smile so maybe she should not have responded to my camera like this but I am glad she did. Perhaps it was because I dropped a euro into her collection box.

Los Mayores

Judging from this photo taken in the Puerta Real you would think that Granada was populated entirely by old people. It isn’t. The younger ones are too busy rushing around so they have no time to sit down, relax and talk. They are even too quick to appear in my photo!

The Trader

The Trader

In the Puerta Real, Granada at the moment there is a craft market in support of humanitarian aid. The traders occupy lock up cabins around the square which make a colourful contribution to the street life of the city.

One Man and his Dog

One Man and his Dog

This living statue stands motionless outside Granada Cathedral waiting for donations. His faithful friend, also motionless, sits nearby keeping a watchful eye on his master. I was in a hurry so I only took one photo of this scene so I am pleased it seems to have worked.

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

There is a retro film festival on in Granada at the moment sponsored by the Cruzcampo brewery. Many of the films in the festival are from the 1950s and star Marylin Monroe. Her face is everywhere in the City. There are banners on the walls of the Teatro  Reina Isabel la Catolica and film posters along the avenue up to the Rio Genil.

A place to meditate

A place to meditate

This beautiful spot is in front of the Ermita de San Miguel Alto just above Sacromonte in Granada. It is just a short stroll from the city and a good place for citizens to go for a country walk. The views of theSsierra Nevada are spectacular but if you look in the opposite direction the whole of the City lies before you.

Market in the Albaicin

Market in the Albaicin

The market in the little square, Plaza Larga in the Albaicin, Granada. The Albaicin is almost a self-contained town in itself with its own vibrant and colourful atmosphere. This old quarter is home to a racial mix which includes Gypsies, Moslems, Spaniards and hun dreds of students who like to rent here. The square was difficult to photograph because of the very strong shadows, cramped space and too many people. I wanted to show the vivid colours of the market and some of the beautiful old buildings.
